Alumni Spotlight | R. Ted Barker '79

R. Ted Barker ’79

“I’ve always felt that the BC experience taught me how to learn, to think and communicate more effectively,” said Ted Barker, class of 1979. He continues to cherish the advantages of attending a small school, the life-long relationships he was able to develop during his college years with fellow students and the “extraordinary educational value” of a Bridgewater degree.

After graduating with a double major in economics and business administration, Barker spent his first nine years with Capitol Records in managerial accounting roles, ultimately becoming a plant controller. Over the course of 20 years, he worked for Newell-Rubbermaid and held a variety of financial management positions in the global Commercial Products division, supporting North American manufacturing, distribution, sales and marketing, and global product development. He now works in corporate finance at Shenandoah Telecommunications (Shentel) in Edinburg, Va.

Barker stated that his BC education was extremely beneficial for his career. “I got the solid foundation I needed for financial management, and the liberal arts curriculum offered me the opportunity to diversify my perspective,” he commented.

His involvement with the College didn’t stop after graduation. Barker has been a highly involved and dedicated alumnus, serving eight years on the BC Alumni Association Board of Directors, including a one-year term as president. An enthusiastic fan of Eagles football, he supports the Eagle Club and said he has “probably missed only three home football games since 2000.” He and his wife Faye have hosted a number of alumni receptions at their Winchester home, as well as football tailgate parties at Shenandoah University when they host BC.

Barker believes it’s worthwhile and important for him to give back and be able to support the College with his time and resources. “I’ve gotten so much more out of it than I’ve given.”
