Alumni Spotlight | Travain Williams Sutphin ’90

Travain Williams Sutphin ’90

“I think what I appreciate most about my Bridgewater education has to be the faculty, staff and administration. Everyone was wonderful, and willing to work with you. If you had a question, you went to that professor and discussed whatever you wanted to know, and they would push you to learn as much as you could.” Travain Williams Sutphin loved attending Bridgewater College. A graduate from the class of 1990, she majored in biology and minored in chemistry. She said that thanks to BC’s liberal arts education, she was exposed to courses she never would have taken otherwise, such as music, philosophy and sociology.

After her graduation, Sutphin began working for Lynchburg General Hospital as a pharmacy technician. Within six weeks, she knew she wanted to be a pharmacist. She obtained her doctor of pharmacy degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. “Bridgewater prepared me for the rigorous work load that I would have to carry. I was prepared to approach problems not only from a logical standpoint but also to consider alternative possibilities. The depth that my Bridgewater College education brought to my pharmacy education was evident,” she commented.

Sutphin is currently the Pharmacy Operations Manager at PharMerica pharmacy in Vinton, Va. She has also taught in the Physician Assistant program at the Jefferson College of Health Sciences and is currently a preceptor to pharmacy students from the Appalachian College of Pharmacy.

In her community, she serves along with her husband, Phillip, as an assistant cubmaster of her son’s Cub Scout pack. She has four children and one grandson and is involved with her church through various Bible studies, small groups and service opportunities. A current member of the BC Alumni Association board of directors, her dedication to her alma mater is evident. She has helped with Eagles We-Haul, Homecoming activities and regional alumni receptions. Sutphin said, “I love to talk about BC, and how it has helped me be the successful person I am today. It was absolutely beneficial for my life and my career.”
