Bridgewater College Welcomes Nine New Full-Time Faculty

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Bridgewater College welcomes nine new full-time faculty members for the 2006-2007 academic year. The faculty members, who will arrive on campus in mid-August for faculty meetings prior to the start of classes on Aug. 29, will join the departments of communication studies, education, health and exercise science, history, music and psychology.

The new faculty members, announced by Dr. Arthur C. Hessler, vice president of academic affairs and dean of the college, are:

Drs. Jean Hawk and Mark Hogan will join the department of education as professor and associate professor respectively.

Hawk received a B.A. from Bluffton (Ohio) College, an M.S. from James Madison University and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University's George Peabody College for Teachers. Most recently, she was professor of education at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where she served as coordinator of elementary education and as coordinator of curriculum block. Hawk also was professor of education at Bluffton College for six years.

Hogan earned a B.A. from Greenville (Ill.) College, an M.A. in English from the University of Iowa at Iowa City, and a Ph.D. in education and human development from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Hogan comes to Bridgewater from EMU, where he was professor of education. From 1994-98, Hogan served as director of the Master of Arts in Education program. He also served as coordinator of secondary education and as the National council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) coordinator for teacher education. In addition, Hogan has worked as a consultant with schools in the local area.

Dr. Daniel Galyen, assistant professor of music and director of instrumental music, received a B.A. from Virginia Tech, an M.M. from Syracuse (N.Y.) University and a Ph.D. from The University of Florida in Gainesville, all in music education. Most recently, Galyen was a doctoral conducting associate at The University of Florida. He also has served as band director at Northside High School in Roanoke, Va.

Dr. Hunter Honeycutt, assistant professor of psychology, received a B.A. in psychology from Wake Forest University. He earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in psychological science from Virginia Tech

and with a developmental training grant was a postdoctoral fellow at Indiana University. Most recently, Honeycutt was an adjunct professor at Indiana University. He also has lectured at Virginia Tech.

Prof. Cathy McKay has been promoted from visiting instructor to assistant professor of health and education. She received a B.S. in kinesiology from James Madison University and an M.S. in health education and promotion from Virginia Tech. She is a doctoral candidate in adapted physical education, curriculum and instruction and teacher education pedagogy at the University of Virginia.

Prof. Amber M.K. Smallwood, assistant professor of communication studies, received a B.S. in radio-television-film from the University of Texas, and an M.A. in telecommunications from Ohio University. She is a doctoral candidate in mass communication-telecommunications and America studies from Indiana University. Most recently, Smallwood has been an associate instructor at Indiana University.

Dr. Kara Vuic, assistant professor of history, received a B.A. in history and English from Marshall University, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in United States history from Indiana University. She was an adjunct instructor in the humanities department at Columbus State Community College. She also has taught in the history department at Indiana University.

Benjamin Erickson, instructor of communication studies, earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Maine. He was public speaking instructor at the University of Maine before coming to Bridgewater College.

Kimberly Korcsmaros, instructor of communication studies, received a regents B.A. from Fairmont (W.Va.) State University, and an M.A. in teaching from Marshall University. She is a doctor of education candidate at West Virginia University. She was an assistant professor of speech at Fairmont State Community and Technical College. She also served as the intercollegiate debate team coach at Fairmont State.
