Students Recognized By Alumni Association

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Bridgewater College Alumni Association has recognized several students for excellence in the campus community. Erin A. Brummett and Karrin Temple were presented the Alumni Association scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year, Brandon M. Showalter, received the Citizenship Award and Chelsea Goss was awarded the inaugural Alumni Legacy Scholarship.

The recipients of the annual scholarships are chosen on academic achievement, good citizenship, financial need and general merit. Two awards will be presented, one to a rising senior and one to a rising junior, at the annual Academic Awards Convocation on May 1. The senior award is valued at $2,400, and the junior scholarship is $1,800.

Brummett, a 2004 graduate of Bethel High School in Hampton, Va., is the daughter of Paul and Leah Brummett and Vicky and Bob Dennis, all of Williamsburg, Va. A junior English major with a minor in communication studies, she is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater's scholastic honor society; Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society; and Pi Kappa Delta, a forensic and debate honor society. She also is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, and is president of the campus chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, a national communication studies honor society.

She is president of the Forensics and Debate team and was a member of the Ethics Bowl team that won the 2007 championship. Brummett is a member of the Oratorio and Concert choirs and has volunteered with Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Red Cross.

Temple, a 2005 graduate of Madison County High School, is the daughter of Edwin and Gail Temple of Radiant, Va. A sophomore history and political science major, Temple is a member of the Flory Fellowship of Scholars honor program, and is vice president of the French Club. She serves as a Student Ambassador and is a resident assistant in her residence hall.

She is a tutor with Shenandoah Academy in Harrisonburg, Va. In addition, Temple has volunteered with 4-H and worked with the youth at New Fellowship Christian Center. She also has served as a volunteer with the schools in Madison County.

The Citizenship Award is presented annually to a senior who has demonstrated citizenship and made contributions within the college community.

Showalter, a 2003 graduate of Broadway High School, is the son of Duane and Zola Showalter of Broadway, Va. A senior international studies and Spanish double major, Showalter is a member of the Philomathes Society. He is a member of the Chorale, the Concert and Oratorio choirs.

As a junior, Showalter studied in Barcelona, Spain, under the Brethren Colleges Abroad program. He also served as a facilitator for the College's High School Leadership Academy. In addition, Showalter was selected for inclusion in the 2007 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Showalter will graduate on May 13.

The Alumni Legacy Scholarship is presented to a rising junior or senior whose parent(s) graduated from Bridgewater College. The scholarship, valued at $1,800, rewards loyalty of alumni who encourage their children to attend BC, provides a sense of connection with previous generations of BC students and fosters an interest in the Alumni Association and its programs.

Goss, a 2005 graduate of Atlee High School, is the daughter of Jeff and Carol Walbridge Goss, class of '75, of Mechanicsville, Va. An athletic training major, Goss is a member of the cross country team and the indoor and outdoor track and field team. She is a member of the Student Senate and serves on the Council on Religious Activities.

Bridgewater College, a private, four-year liberal arts college, enrolls more than 1,500 students. Founded in 1880 and located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, it was the state's first private, coeducational senior college.
