Bridgewater College Welcomes 13 New Faculty Members | ||
|
BRIDGEWATER, Va. Bridgewater College welcomes 13 new faculty members for the 2007-2008 academic year – one associate professor, six assistant professors and six visiting professors. The faculty members, who will arrive on campus in late-August for faculty meetings prior to the start of classes on Sept. 4, will join the departments of biology, communication studies, health and exercise science, history, music, philosophy and religion, sociology and psychology. The new faculty members, announced by Dr. Carol Scheppard, vice president and dean for academic affairs are: Dr. Alan Eby will join the department of psychology as associate professor. He received a BS from Eastern Mennonite University and a doctor of psychology degree from Fuller School of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary at Pasadena, Calif. Most recently, he was an associate professor at EMU. He is a licensed clinical psychologist. Dr. Kimberly Bolyard, assistant professor of biology, received a BA in international studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA in biology from Indiana University at Bloomington. She earned a Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology from Indiana University. For the past two years, Bolyard has been a visiting assistant professor at James Madison University. She also served two years as editor and senior research analyst for the Journal of Education for International Development and EQ Review for the American Institutes for Research. Amanda Campbell, assistant professor of health and exercise science – pedagogy emphasis, received a BS from James Madison University and an M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. She is a doctoral candidate in physical education – pedagogy at UVA. Most recently, she was an instructor at UVA. Robert Hammill, assistant professor of health and exercise science – health promotions, received a BA from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and an MA from the University of Northern Iowa. He is a doctoral candidate in sports medicine at UVA. Most recently, he was athletic trainer at Fishburne Military School. Dr. Edgar Lickey, assistant professor of biology, received a BS from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C. He earned an MS from Appalachian State University and a Ph.D. in botany from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Most recently, he was a post-doctoral research associate surveying the basidiomycetes of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Dr. Michele Strano, assistant professor of communication studies, received a BA from Pennsylvania State University. She earned an MA and a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia. Most recently, she was a Mellon Lecturing Fellow at Duke University. In 2005-2006, she received the Duke University Award for Excellence in Teaching Writing. | ||

Dr. Laura Yordy, assistant professor of philosophy and religion, received a BA from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., an M.T.S. at Duke Divinity School and a Ph.D. in religion at Duke University. Most recently, she was an adjunct instructor at Shaw University and a visiting assistant professor at Wake Forest University. Dr. Donald DePoy, visiting associate professor of sociology, earned a B.U.S., an M.Ed. and a Ph.D. from the University of Maine – Orono. Since 1995, he has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maine, Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. He also has been an associate professor at the New England School of Communication at Husson College in Bangor, Maine, since 1994. During the summers, he serves as a captain for Gafia Sailing Charter Inc. Dr. Moshe Khurgel, visiting assistant professor of biology, earned a BS and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did post-doctoral studies at the University of Virginia. Most recently, he was an adjunct professor at Mary Baldwin College. He also was a K-12 "Brain Awareness" educator in the Charlottesville schools. Dr. David K. Mathias, visiting assistant professor of philosophy and religion, received a BA from Goshen College, an M.A.T.S. from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary and a Ph.D. in religious studies from Boston University. This past year, he was an adjunct faculty member at JMU. During 2005-06, he was an assistant professor at EMU. Dr. Lisa Porter, visiting professor of sociology, earned a BA from the University of Wyoming, an MA from California Lutheran University and a Ph.D. in cultural studies from Claremont Graduate University. Most recently, she was assistant professor of education at the University of La Verne in La Verne, Calif. Dr. Jason Vuic, visiting assistant professor of history, earned a BA from Wake Forest University, an MA from the University of Richmond and a Ph.D. in Balkan and East European history from Indiana University at Bloomington. Most recently, he was assistant director of the Center for Slavic and East European Studies at Ohio State University. Dr. Timothy M. Weir, visiting assistant professor and director of instrumental music, received a bachelor of music from Canberra School of Music at the Australian National University. He earned a graduate diploma of education at the University of Canberra, a master of music at Florida International University and a doctor of musical arts from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. Most recently, he was an adjunct professor at Virginia Tech and an instructor at Radford University. | ||
