Bridgewater College Seniors Selected For Who's Who

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Eighteen Bridgewater College seniors have been selected for inclusion in the 2007 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

The students selected are: Terri Adele Baker of Covington, Va.; David John Bell of Purcellville, Va.; Sarah Burgess of Haymarket, Va.; Dana I. Cristea of Romania; Janita W. Daggy of Deerfield, Va.; Rachel Eller of Staunton, Va.; Bliss Gordon of Woodland Park, Colo.; Lacey Harold of Clifton Forge, Va.; Dana Henderson of Fincastle, Va.; and Rachel Jenkins of Winchester, Va. Also April Miller of Gettysburg, Pa.; Diana Nieves of Harrisonburg, Va.; Jessica Leigh Pearson of Front Royal, Va.; Megan J. Powell of Culpeper, Va.; Emily Price of Harrisonburg, Va.; Brandon M. Showalter of Broadway, Va.; Beverly Walsh of Staunton, Va.; and Jessica Young of Fishersville, Va.

The students are cited for academic achievement, community service and leadership activities. The 2007 edition of Who's Who lists students from more than 2,000 colleges and universities throughout the United States and several foreign countries.

The directory of outstanding students has been published since 1934.

Baker, a 2003 graduate of Covington High School, is the daughter of John and Terri Hudson of Covington, Va., and Charles Baker. A communication studies major, Baker is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, a national communications honor society, and Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society. She is a member of the Black Student Association and has served as a facilitator for the College's High School Leadership Academy (HSLA). Baker serves as a resident assistant in her residence hall, and participated in the College's Leadership Symposium. She also is a member of the Dance Team.

Bell is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bell III of Purcellville. A history and political science major, Bell is a member of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honor society. He is a member of the Student Senate and serves as vice president of the Student Ambassador Association. He also works for Veritas, the student campus newspaper. Bell is a four-year participant in the intramural sports program.

James and Barbara Burgess of Haymarket. A psychology major, Burgess is a member of Psi Chi, a national psychology honor society. As a junior, she served as president of the Psychology Club. During Burgess' first two years at BC, she served as a Student Ambassador. She also was a member of Brethren Student Movement. She has volunteered with the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA and with the Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. During the 2006 fall semester, Burgess completed a practicum with the Ride with Pride at Cedar Creek Stables in Staunton, Va., a program that provides equine therapy for children and adults with disabilities.

Cristea is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dorin Cristea of Romania. A physics major and mathematics minor, she is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater's scholastic honor society. Cristea serves as president of the Physics Club and is a member of the International Club. She is a four-year volunteer with Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. In addition, Cristea has participated all four years in the intramural program at Bridgewater College. She participated in a summer research project at Kansas State University. Her research, "Single Mode Fiber Fusion Splicing Using a CO2 Laser," was funded by the university's physics department.

Daggy, a 2004 graduate of Buffalo Gap High School, is the daughter of Colin and Jane Daggy of Deerfield. A philosophy and religion major with a minor in psychology, she is a member of the Philomathes Society and Psi Chi. She is a member of the Psychology Club and serves on the College's committee on student affairs. She is co-chair of Relay for Life and is a member of TABOO, a campus group raising awareness of drug and alcohol abuse. Daggy also serves as a resident assistant in the student apartments on campus.

Eller, a 2003 graduate of Sherando High School in Stephens City, Va., is the daughter of Marlin and Joyce Eller of Staunton. A communication studies major with minors in theatre and business administration, Eller is a member of the Philomathes Society, Lambda Pi Eta, and serves as president of Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society. Active in music, she is a member of the Chorale and the Concert and Oratorio choir. She also is a member of the Handbell Choir. She serves as president of the Pinion Players, the campus theatre group, and is a student assistant in the theatre department. In February, Eller will paricipate in the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACFT) to be held in Americus, Ga., for her performance in the College's fall production of "The Threepenny Opera" by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.

Harold, a 2003 graduate of Alleghany High School, is the daughter of Teresa Harold and Richard Harold, both of Clifton Forge, Va. A music major and English minor, Harold is a member of the Philomathes Society, and serves as secretary of the campus chapter of Alpha Chi. She is a four-year member of the Symphonic and Jazz bands and performs in the Pep Band. Harold has participated all four years in the intramural sports program and has served as a tutor.

Henderson, a 2003 graduate of James River High School in Buchanan, Va., is the daughter of R.D. and Cathy Henderson of Fincastle. A family and consumer sciences major, Henderson is a member of the Philomathes Society. She is president of the campus chapter of the Student Virginia Education Association and served as coordinator for the association's Literacy Days. She is production director for Eagle Productions, a group that provides activities on campus. Henderson also is a member of the Student Ambassador Association and serves as an orientation leader.

Jenkins, a 2003 graduate of James Wood High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Jenkins of Winchester. An English major and communication studies minor, Jenkins is editor-in-chief of Veritas. She has completed internships with WHSV-TV3, the local television station in Harrisonburg, Va., and with a local weekly newspaper. She has served on the Council for Exceptional Children and has served as an orientation leader.

Miller, a 2003 graduate of Biglerville High School, is the daughter of George and Rose Miller of Gettysburg. A biology major, Miller is a member of the Philomathes Society. She is president of the campus chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa, and for the past two years, has served as president of her class. She is a four-year member of the Pre-Med Society and as a senior completed an internship at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. For the past two years, Miller has served with the Bridgewater Volunteer Rescue Squad. A four-year member of the track and field team, she holds the College's record in the women's weight throw with a distance of 42 feet, 11 inches. She also holds the College's record in the hammer throw with a distance of 141 feet, one inch.

Nieves, a 2003 graduate of Broadway High School, is the daughter of Ivan and Eugenia Nieves of Harrisonburg. A Spanish education major with an English as a second language minor, Nieves is a member of the Philomathes Society and Alpha Chi. She is a four-year member of the Spanish Club and studied in Barcelona, Spain and in Xalapa, Mexico, under the Brethren Colleges Abroad program. Pearson, a 2003 graduate of Warren County High School, is the daughter of Barbara Carr of Front Royal, and Gary Pearson of Strasburg, Va. A communication studies major, she is a member of the Philomathes Society and Lambda Pi Eta. She is a member of the Mass Communications Organization and the Student Ambassador Association. She has served as a facilitator for HSLA. Pearson also has been active in Relay for Life both on campus and through an internship at the Bridgewater Retirement Community. As a junior, Pearson was a member of the TechRider program which worked with the College's C.E. Shull Information and Technology Center to provide free basic computer and Internet training to libraries, high schools and retirement communities.

Powell, a 2003 graduate of Culpeper County High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Powell of Culpeper. A business administration major, Powell is a member of the Philomathes Society, Lamda Pi Eta and Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity. She is a member of the Mass Communications Organization and is a member of Eagle Productions. Powell serves as director of public relations for the campus chapter of Students in Free Enterprise. She served as a facilitator for HSLA.. A four-year member of the Pep Band, Powell also is a member of the College's Convocation committee. In May 2006, Powell received the Robert L. Hueston Scholarship in Accounting which carries a $5,000 scholarship.

Price, a 2003 graduate of Turner Ashby High School, is the daughter of Edmund and Deborah Price of Harrisonburg. A communication studies major, she is a member of Lambda Pi Eta and Omicron Delta Kappa. She serves as president of the Mass Communications Organization and is president of the Student Ambassador Association. She also served as an HSLA facilitator for two years and was an orientation leader for three years. In the fall of 2006, Price received an Outstanding Service Award from the College.

Showalter, a 2003 graduate of Broadway High School, is the son of Duane and Zola Showalter of Broadway. A Spanish and international studies double major, he is a member of the Philomathes Society. Showalter is a member of Campus Crusade for Christ and was a three-year member of the Baptist Student Union (now Believers Strongly United). Active in music, he is a member of the Chorale and the Concert Choir. He served as a soloist for Handel's Messiah which was presented in December 2006 by the Oratorio Choir. As a junior, he studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain, under the Brethren Colleges Abroad program. He also was a facilitator for HSLA.

Walsh, a 2003 graduate of Buffalo Gap High School, is the daughter of Kevin Walsh and Chris Appl-Walsh of Staunton. An allied health science major, Walsh is a member of the Philomathes Society and Alpha Chi. She is a member of the Brethren Student Movement and Campus Crusade for Christ. Walsh serves as a coordinator for the College's deputation teams, which provide programs for churches throughout the mid-Atlantic region. She is a four-year member of the women's soccer team and serves as captain. As a junior, she studied in New Zealand under the Brethren Colleges Abroad program.

Young, a 2003 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School, is the daughter of Ronald and Dawn Young of Fishersville. An allied health science major, Young is a member of the Philomathes Society, Alpha Chi and Chi Alpha Sigma, a national athletic honor society. In the spring of 2006, she received an Outstanding Tutor Award for her work in exercise physiology, general physiology and anatomy. A four-year member of the women's basketball team, Young was named to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference Academic Team as a freshman, sophomore and junior. She also has participated in intramural sports all four years at Bridgewater College.
