Students Awarded For Excellence In Business And Economics | ||

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The George S. Aldhizer II Department of Economics and Business at Bridgewater College cited five students at the annual Academic Awards Convocation on April 29. The David G. and Margie Messick Smith Endowed Scholarship was presented to Jeffery B. Dallas Jr., a junior business administration and biology double major, The scholarship, which is awarded to a rising senior who has demonstrated exceptional promise in the field of management, was established by two Bridgewater graduates in memory of their grandparents, David G. and Margie Messick Smith. The award carries a $1,050 scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. Dallas, a 2005 graduate of Luray High School, is the son of Jeff and Gail Dallas of Luray, Va. Carolyn Michael, a junior business administration major with a minor in philosophy and religion, received the Robert L. Hueston Scholarship in Accounting. The award honors the contributions Robert L. Hueston made to the study of accounting at Bridgewater College while a member of the faculty from 1953-86. The award carries a $6,000 scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. Michael, a 2000 graduate of Fort Defiance High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Michael of Mount Sidney, Va. Donald B. Deeds III, a junior business administration major, received the David E. Will Endowed Scholarship Fund for the Support of Public Accounting. Will, a 1983 graduate, is a partner and certified public accountant with the accounting firm of Mitchell Wiggins and Company LLP in Richmond, Va. The award goes to a rising senior who concentrates their studies on accounting with the intent to pursue a career as a certified public accountant with a public accounting firm. The award carries a $1,475 scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. Deeds, a 2005 graduate of Stuarts Draft High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald B. Deeds Jr. of Stuarts Draft, Va. Jenna Cumberland, a senior business administration major, received the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants Award given to an outstanding student studying accounting. The award consists of a certificate and her name will be engraved on a plaque at Bridgewater College. Cumberland, a 2004 graduate of South Carroll High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Cumberland of Woodbine, Md. standing Senior Award for scholarly achievement and leadership. He was presented a framed print of Memorial Hall. Darsch, a 2004 graduate of North Carroll High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Bruce Darsch of Hampstead, Md. Bridgewater College, a private, four-year liberal arts college, enrolls more than 1,500 students. Founded in 1880 and located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, it was the state's first private, coeducational senior college.
