Seniors Recognized For Excellence In Psychology | ||

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Three Bridgewater College seniors, MacKenzie Elizabeth Grimes, Candace E. Perry and Adrianna Franchetti were recognized for excellence with the Donald R. Witters Awards in Psychology during the annual Awards Convocation on April 29. The psychology awards are named in honor of Dr. Donald R. Witters, who retired at the end of the 2005-2006 academic year as professor of psychology emeritus. He joined the Bridgewater College faculty in 1968 as a professor of psychology and served as chair of the department from 1990 to 1996. Each student will receive a Bridgewater College blanket and two books, What Shamu Taught Me about Life, Love and Marriage by Amy Sutherland and B.F. Skinner's Beyond Freedom and Dignity. The winner's names will also be added to a plaque in the psychology department. Grimes was presented the Outstanding Academic Performance Award, which recognizes consistent superior performance in the classroom. A 2004 graduate of Spotswood High School, Grimes is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Don Grimes of Penn Laird, Va. Perry received the Outstanding Research Award, presented for excellence in demonstrated research and potential to contribute to the knowledge base within the discipline. A 2004 graduate of Spotswood High School, Perry is the daughter of Mary C. Perry of Grottoes, Va. Franchetti received the Outstanding Leadership Award given to a psychology student who has demonstrated leadership across the campus. A 2004 graduate of West Chester East High School, Franchetti is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Franchetti of Birdsboro, Pa. All three award winners are psychology majors with minors in neuroscience and members of Psi Chi, a national psychology honor society. They will graduate on Sunday, May 11. Bridgewater College, a private, four-year liberal arts college, enrolls more than 1,500 students. Founded in 1880 and located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, it was the state's first private, coeducational senior college.
