BC Opens 2008-2009 Lyceum Series With Duo-Pianists

BRIDGEWATER, Va.— Fresita, Spanish born duo-pianists Elena Martín and José Melitón, will open Bridgewater College's 2008-2009 Lyceum Series with a concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Carter Center for Worship and Music.

Tickets for Lyceums are $13 for adults and $10 for seniors, children and non-Bridgewater College students. Tickets are only available at the door one hour before the start of the performance.

Emerging in a short period of time as one of the main performers in two-piano music, thanks to their playing in perfect synchronization, the duo has presented concerts in the United States, Europe and Asia.

"The two revealed at once their sense of unity, two bodies playing as a single mind and spirit," says Manuel Albacete, a critic from Cleveland. "Occasional glances across the pianos were all that were necessary to keep them perfectly synchronized."

Martín has transcribed more than a dozen pieces from Spanish composers into two-piano transcriptions. Copies and recordings of her manuscripts of "Spanish Dance No. 1" and "Spanish Dance No. 2" from La Vida Breve are housed at the Manuel de Falla Archives in Granada, Spain.

The duo has appeared on numerous TV and radio broadcasts worldwide, including National Public Radio. Martín and Melitón have recorded CDs "Duende" and "Jaleo" on the Centaur label.

Both Martín and Melitón hold the Titulo Superior de Piano from the Real Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Madrid, as well as master's degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
