String Orchestra of New York City To Perform At Bridgewater | ||
|
BRIDGEWATER, Va. The String Orchestra of New York City, a high energy string ensemble with a fresh and innovative approach, will present a lyceum at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in the Carter Center for Worship and Music at Bridgewater College. Tickets for lyceums are $13 for adults and $10 for seniors, children and non-Bridgewater College students. Tickets are only available at the door one hour before the start of the performance. The program includes Concerto for oboe and string orchestra in A Minor by R. Vaughan Williams and features Thomas Gallant as oboist. A First Prize winner of the Concert Artists Guild International New York Competition, Gallant is one of the world's few virtuoso solo and chamber music performers on the oboe. He has been praised by the New Yorker magazine as "a player who unites technical mastery with intentness, charm and wit." The 16-member orchestra is composed of some of New York's most exceptional string players performing without a conductor. The ensemble blurs the line between orchestral playing and chamber music while performing with the flexibility of a string quartet and the power and scope of an orchestra. The musicians stand while performing which creates a more vibrant relationship with the audience. A majority of the members of the orchestra are graduates of the Curtis Institute and the Julliard School and collectively they have performed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and with the New York City Ballet. #####
