Husband And Wife Team Exhibit At Bridgewater College

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Husband and wife team, Elizabeth and Lee Sauder from Lexington, Va., will exhibit paintings and forged metal sculpture in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery at Bridgewater College Feb. 4 – 27.

Both artists have previously exhibited at Bridgewater College – Lee in 1999 and Elizabeth in 2000.

An artists' reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in the Miller Gallery. Before the reception, the Sauders will give an artist talk in the Gallery at 4 p.m. about the work in the show, the process they use and where their ideas come from. The reception, talk and exhibit are open to the public at no charge.

The exhibit will showcase their most recent work, along with a few favorite pieces from the past 10 years. Elizabeth will show still life paintings and landscapes in oil along with digital images that straddle the line between landscape and still life. Lee will exhibit sculptures in forged iron.

Working in very different media, subject matter and imagery, the couple shares a concern for materials and process. Elizabeth's paintings use a wide variety of paint application techniques, often combined with 23 carat gold, platinum and dyed sterling silver leaf.

Many of Lee's sculptures are forged from iron he smelted from raw ore using the bloomery process. This process (also referred to as direct reduction) is the original method of producing iron. Operating on a small scale and at relatively low temperatures, it produced a sponge of malleable iron and slag that was forged directly into a wrought iron bar or billet.

Elizabeth graduated from Sweet Briar College with a bachelor of arts degree in studio art.

Lee was a National Merit Scholar at Earlham College in Richmond, Ind. He did with OK Barnes at Taber Forge in Camden, Maine, Chris Axelson at Viking Forge in Carmel, Calif., and with Vaclav Jaros in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He is proprietor and ironmaster of Woods Creek Forge.

The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight Monday Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and 3 to 11 p.m. Sunday.
