Justice G. Steven Agee Sworn In As Fourth Circuit Court Of Appeals Justice | ||

BRIDGEWATER.Va. Virginia Supreme Court Justice G. Steven Agee, of Salem, was sworn in as one of 11 judges on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit on July 2. Agee, who filled a seat vacated by J. Michael Luttig, was nominated by President George W. Bush on March 13 and was confirmed on a 96-0 vote by the U.S. Senate on May 20. Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III of the Fourth Circuit Court presided over the swearing-in ceremony, which was held in the courtroom of the Federal Court Building here. Agee is the third Virginian to sit on the court, which is headquartered in Richmond and has appellate federal jurisdiction for Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and West Virginia. Agee, a native of Roanoke, is a 1974 graduate of Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va., a 1977 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law and a 1978 graduate of the New York University School of Law. He has served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates (1982-1994), as a judge on the Court of Appeals of Virginia (2001-2003) and as a justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia since 2003. He also served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve from 1986-1997, and is a member of the board of trustees at Bridgewater College. "Justice Agee's qualifications to serve on the Fourth Circuit are as impressive as any circuit-court nominee for whom I have voted in my 30 years in the Senate," said Sen.
