Quarteto Viagem to Perform Brazilian Choro Music March 20
March 07, 2017
Quarteto Viagem will present a lyceum at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 20, in the Carter Center for Worship and Music at Bridgewater College.
Quarteto viagem (the Voyage Quartet) is a group of three Brazilians and an American dedicated to performing music from the Brazilian choro repertoire.
Choro—Brazilian instrumental music dating to the late 19th century—combines European harmonies and song forms with Afro-Brazilian rhythms and improvisation. Choro music is currently enjoying a renaissance in Brazil and internationally.
Quarteto Viagem’s repertoire draws on the entire history of choro, ranging from foundational artists Chiquinha Gonzaga and Ernesto Nazareth to classic composers Pixinguinha and Jacob do Bandolim.
While the group draws inspiration from traditional choro, members also bring a sense of playfulness to the performance.
The concert is free and open to the public.
