Bridgewater College’s Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) undergraduate program has been reviewed by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) and recognized as a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) approved program offering coursework covering the content required for the CFLE designation.

Gaining the NCFR acknowledgement means that Bridgewater College students who complete the FCS human development and family studies track are eligible to sit for the CFLE examination. Becoming a Certified Family Life Educator can provide assurance to potential employers that a BC graduate has a high level of proficiency in 10 core content areas identified in the CFLE credentialing examination.

The 10 content areas include: families and individuals in societal context, internal dynamics of families, human growth and development across the life span, human sexuality, interpersonal relationships, family resource management, parent education and guidance, family law and public policy, professional ethics and practice and family life education methodology.

“Endorsement of our FCS program by NCFR provides a peer-reviewed approval to a program that has been extraordinarily strong for years,” said Dr. Barbara H. Long, division head for professional studies at Bridgewater College.

“Careers as family educators are growing in both the United States and Canada,” Long added. “Our students will be postured to take those jobs and make an immediate impact for their clients and employers.”

Founded in 1938, the National Council on Family Relations is the premier advocacy and credentialing organization for professionals making their careers impacting families.
