Bridgewater College Web Site Policy
Replaces the “Policies for World Wide Web Content” and supplements the Acceptable Use Guidelines
Bridgewater College encourages and facilitates an open educational environment. One tool used in a modern college setting for communication, internally and externally, is the Internet, and chiefly the World Wide Web.
Bridgewater College's World Wide Web presence is used to promote campus activities, provide timely information, welcome visitors, highlight educational opportunities, enhance learning, and direct students, faculty, staff, alumni, and potential applicants to resources and other services at the College.
Though the World Wide Web has revolutionized access to publishing and free expression, the content of the pages of the College Web site and all pages under its jurisdiction (hosted on BC servers) reflect on and can greatly affect the reputation of Bridgewater College as a whole. Thus, contents of its pages must comply with all federal, state, and local laws as well as this Web Site Policy and the Acceptable Use Guidelines.
The Web Site Policy and the Acceptable Use Guidelines are applicable to all individuals including faculty, staff, students, and any College affiliates who have been given or obtained access to technological capabilities (e.g., computer equipment, systems or networks) operated by Bridgewater College. The policy includes any means of access - on or off campus - and applies to all resources (College-owned or privately-owned) that are connected to the College’s systems or networks.
Guidelines concerning allowable faculty, staff and student Web content and use include, but are not limited to the following:
- Published content may not contain pornographic, slanderous, or blatantly offensive material or links to same.
- Files, data or communications may be reviewed as necessary with cause and no right to privacy should be expected by individuals using College equipment or the College’s network.
- Content providers must abide by established copyright laws when publishing material. Copyrighted works may not be included on published pages without express written consent of the author.
- Bridgewater College slogans, symbols, photos, and insignia may not be used on personal Web pages whereby they make the page appear as an official Bridgewater College Web page. Unapproved Bridgewater College logos, slogans, symbols or insignia are not permitted. Faculty may use select logos identified by Bridgewater College on personal Web pages associated with their role at the College.
- Published content construing, providing direction or access to, or making reference to illegal on-line activity employing the World Wide Web or any other technology including hacking, illegal file-sharing, copyright infringement or circumvention or any form thereof is not tolerated.
- Text, photos, and other graphic images may not be used by others for any purpose without the prior express written permission by Bridgewater College.
- Fund raising for any non-college entity is not permitted without written approval of the employee’s vice president.
- Links to non-college Web sites must open a new browser window whenever possible.
- Any exceptions to any of the above regulations must be approved in writing by the employee’s vice president.
- Any violation of this policy may result in the immediate revocation of all on-line privileges.
Bridgewater College provides World Wide Web publishing facilities to its faculty, staff, and students. This is a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked at any time. The determination of what constitutes allowable content rests with the College. Sanctions for improper use by employees and students will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
