BC Symphonic Band to Give Concert on May 5
The Bridgewater College Symphonic Band will present a concert of wind music on Sunday, May 5, at 3 p.m., in Cole Hall.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The Symphonic Band is directed by Dr. Christine Carrillo, assistant professor of music and director of instrumental music at Bridgewater College.
The concert opens with “Stardance” by Michael Sweeney. The band surrounds the auditorium and immerses the audience in a “stardance” of sounds and moods.
Jack Stamp’s “Pastime: A Salute to Baseball” is based on “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and pays musical tribute to athletes such as Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.
“Armenian Dances” by Alfred Reed is based on authentic Armenian folk songs from the collected works of Gomidas Vartabed, the founder of Armenian classical music.
“Charm” by Pulitzer Prize composer Kevin Puts, is a new work for the band.
The concert will feature two student conductors. Sara Urry, a senior music major from Easton, Md., will direct the first movement of Frank Ticheli’s Cajun Folk Songs. Miranda L. Fitzgerald, a junior music major from Verona, Va., will conduct “Into the Storm” by Robert W. Smith.
