Katie Furrow Awarded 2013 Petcher Scholarship
Bridgewater College student Katie Furrow received the Esther Mae Wilson Petcher Memorial Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year. The $1,835 scholarship was presented at the annual awards convocation on May 7.
The award is named in memory of Esther Mae Wilson Petcher, a member of the Bridgewater class of 1944 and a former missionary to Nigeria. The grant is given each year to a rising senior in good academic standing who demonstrates leadership in campus activities with emphasis on religious life.
Furrow, a sociology major with a minor in peace studies, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Furrow of Boones Mill, Va.
At Bridgewater, Furrow is a member of the Philomathes Society, the college’s scholastic honor society. She is involved with the Brethren Student Movement and has served as recording secretary and coordinator of the Church of the Brethren’s Interdistrict Youth Cabinet.
She is a member of the campus chapter of New Community Project, as well as being involved with the organization at the national level.
This past summer, Furrow was a member of the Church of the Brethren (COB) Youth Peace Travel Team visiting camps in Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio and Pennsylvania, as well as the COB Annual Conference in St. Louis and the COB National Young Adult Conference in Tennessee.
During the summer of 2011, Furrow completed a ministry summer service internship through the Church of the Brethren at Camp Mardela in Maryland.
