Kang and Polezhaeva Honored by Foreign Languages Department
Bridgewater College seniors Stina Kang and Nadezhda Polezhaeva were presented the Raymond N. Andes Awards at the annual Awards Convocation on May 7.
The awards, which honor a former chair of the college’s foreign languages department, are presented annually to the top seniors majoring in Spanish and French in the department of foreign languages. The late Dr. Andes, a 1940 graduate of Bridgewater College, taught French from 1946 until he retired in 1983.
Kang was presented the Spanish award. She received a cash prize and a book, Maya’s Notebook by Isabel Allende.
Kang, a Spanish major with a minor in social work is the daughter of Robert and Young Hee Kang of Fairfax, Va. At Bridgewater, Kang has served two years as president of the Spanish Club. For the past three years, she has served as president of Amigos Unidos, a cultural outreach program between Bridgewater College students and Latino students at Wilbur S. Pence Middle School.
Polezhaeva was presented the French award. She received a cash prize, along with a collection of 19th century French poems, a collection of illustrated Aesop’s Fables by Jean de La Fontaine and two academic books.
Polezhaeva, a French major, is the daughter of Nikolay Polezhaev and Liza Polezhaeva of Montpelier, Va.
During the 2013 spring semester, Polezhaeva completed student teaching at Turner Ashby High School. She has served as a French tutor to middle- and high-school students. During her junior year, she spent a semester in Strasbourg, France under the BCA study abroad program. She plans on returning to France in September to complete the teacher assistant program in Toulouse, France.
Both Kang and Polezhaeva graduated on May 18.
