2013 Scholar-Athlete Awards Presented at BC
Bridgewater College recognized three outstanding senior athletes during the annual Awards Convocation on May 7. The Geisert Scholar-Athlete Awards were presented to Morgan Keplinger and Timothy Wisniewski, and Rebecca Claytor received the Harold and Carol Lehman Sportsmanship Award.
The Geisert Awards, named in honor of a former president of Bridgewater College and his late wife, Wayne F. and Maurine Geisert, are presented each spring to a male and a female student who have demonstrated intercollegiate athletic achievement, sportsmanship and academic excellence. Geisert was president of the college from 1964 to 1994.
Keplinger, who received the 2013 female Geisert Scholar-Athlete Award, is a member of the women’s soccer team and women’s track and field. She serves as a captain for both teams. In indoor track and field, Keplinger holds the school record in the 500- and 800-meters. She also was a member of the 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter and distance medley relay teams that set school records.
In women’s soccer, Keplinger had 60 career starts. She assisted on the goal that sent Bridgewater to its first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship game.
Keplinger, a health and physical education major, is the daughter of Jared and Peggy Keplinger of Boonsboro, Md. She is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater’s scholastic honor society, and Chi Alpha Sigma, the national college athlete honor society. She is a member of the college’s student athlete advisory committee.
Wisniewski, who received the 2013 male Geisert Scholar-Athlete Award, is a member of the men’s cross country and track and field teams. Wisniewski was named to the 2012 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and was a two-time ODAC All-Academic selection in cross country. He was named the 2013 ODAC Indoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year and the 2013 ODAC Outdoor Scholar Athlete of the Year.
He holds Bridgewater’s indoor 1,000-meter run record and was a member of the 4x800-meter relay and the distance medley relay teams that set school records. The distance medley relay team also set an ODAC record.
Wisniewski, an English major, is the son of Donald and Kathy Wisniewski of Fredericksburg, Va. At Bridgewater, Wisniewski is a member of the Philomathes Society and Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society. He is a four-year participant in the college’s intramural program.
The Harold and Carol Lehman Sportsmanship Award is given to students who demonstrate respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility before, during and after athletic contests. Harold, a member of the class of 1956, and his wife, Carol, live in Potomac Falls, Va.
Claytor, who received the sportsmanship award, is a member of the varsity volleyball team. She saw action in 30 matches this season. During the fall semester of her junior year, Claytor served as co-coach of the junior varsity girls’ volleyball team at Turner Ashby High School.
Claytor, an environmental sciences major, is the daughter of Katharine Custer of Mount Clinton, Va., and Dan Claytor of Hinton, Va.
All three student-athletes graduated on May 18.
