5/21/2012

Four Bridgewater College seniors, Carina Botterbusch from Dover, Pa., Paul Brockman from Orange, Va., Kelley Harris from Staunton, Va.,  and Kyle A. Remnant from Bridgewater, Va., were recognized for excellence in the performing arts at the Creative Arts Awards on May 1.

Brockman and Remnant were presented the Nelson T. Huffman Award for Musical Excellence. Selected by the music faculty, this award is given to seniors who have excelled both musically and academically. The award honors the late Nelson T. Huffman, longtime professor and chair of the department of music, and includes a plaque and cash prize.

Brockman and Remnant also were presented the award for Outstanding Member of the Concert Choir. In addition, Remnant, along with Botterbusch, received the award for Outstanding Member of the Jazz Ensemble.

Harris received the award for Outstanding Member of the Chorale.

Brockman, a music major, is the son of Bob and Kris Brockman from Orange. Botterbusch, a sociology major with minors in psychology and social work, is the daughter of Bob and Donna Botterbusch from Dover. Harris, a liberal studies major, is the daughter of Doug and Nancy Harris from Staunton. Remnant, a music major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald W. Remnant from Bridgewater.

Brockman, Harris and Remnant are all members of the College Chorale, and the Concert Choir and serve as student assistants in the music department. Remnant is a member of the Handbell Choir, and Brockman serves as its co-director.

The music awards are based on outstanding music contributions and the individual’s contribution to the ensembles’ esprit de corps. Each recipient received a certificate and had their name engraved on a plaque that hangs in the music department.

Kayla Becker received the Stephan Tayman Scholarship for $1,000 for the 2012-13 academic year. Tayman, a member of the class of 1999, died while a student at Bridgewater College and the scholarship is given in his memory by his family.
