Emily Birr Awarded Petcher Scholarship for 2014-15 Academic Year
Bridgewater College student Emily Birr received the Esther Mae Wilson Petcher Memorial Scholarship for the 2014-2015 academic year. The $1,900 scholarship was presented at the annual awards convocation.
The award is named in memory of Esther Mae Wilson Petcher, a member of the Bridgewater class of 1944 and a former missionary to Nigeria. The grant is given each year to a rising senior in good academic standing who demonstrates leadership in campus activities with emphasis on religious life.
Birr, a senior health and exercise science major with a minor in French, is the daughter of Julie Siler-Birr of South Bend, Ind., and Robert Birr of Elkhart, Ind.
At Bridgewater, Birr is involved with the Brethren Student Movement and serves on the Spiritual Life Board. She is a two-year member of the Church of the Brethren’s Interdistrict Youth Cabinet. She serves as a tutor for the New Testament class.
She is in charge of publicity for the campus chapter of New Community Project, an organization that promotes peace through justice, care for creation and experiential learning.
Birr is an Orientation team leader and is a student switchboard operation for the college.
During her summers, Birr has worked full time at Camp Mack in Milford, Ind.
