Front Royal Resident is First Recipient of New Scholarship at BC
Bridgewater College sophomore Oshene I. Kelly of Front Royal, Va., is the first recipient of the Class of 1965 Scholarship, which was recently established by alumni of the Bridgewater College class to recognize deserving first-generation students.
Kelly is majoring in health and exercise science and minoring in nutrition and wellness. She is the daughter of Gwendolyn Kelly of Front Royal.
"Receiving the Class of 1965 Scholarship means so much to me," said Kelly. "This scholarship puts me one step closer to my goal, which is to be the first person in my family to go to college."
Kelly noted that she is excited to be the first person to start a new tradition in her family that, hopefully, will continue in the years to come.
"I want to be that person that my niece and brothers look up to, and say, ‘I can do this because you have showed me that it can be done and have given me hope,’" she said.
The scholarship itself, which was written by members of the Bridgewater class of 1965, notes that "many of us were the first generation in our families to attend college, and we remember the importance of the encouragement of parents, teachers, counselors and others who saw the potential in us. The members of the class of 1965 wish both to express our devotion to our alma mater on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of our graduation and to extend a helping hand to new generations of Bridgewater College students like the helping hand so many of us received."
