ENG 101: Effective Writing I
Fall 2007

Weeks 5-9 Return to Weeks 1-4

During this part of the course, we will work on establishing appropriate reading behaviors for writers--noting how writers accomplish their purposes and adopting some of their strategies.  You'll be writing your humanities essay and preparing a midterm portfolio for my evaluation.  Then we'll be moving on to writing in the sciences.

Presentations. Brainstorming activity: PDP essay on Intellectual Growth.
Assignment for 10/4: Begin thinking about a topic for your humanities essay. If you have not finished 1984, do so.
10/4 (R)
Discussion of Orwell.  Developing your essay topic. See Essay Starters.  Do you need to do some research? Evaluating Web sites. In-class mini-conferences. The Midterm Portfolio (due by 5:00 p.m. Sunday, 10/14).
Assignment for 10/11: Draft humanities essay and work on Midterm Portfolio.
Week 6
10/9 (T) Fall Break

10/11 (R)
We will start the humanities essay in class, possibly with a fast in-class draft that can stand as the basis for your fully developed essay in your portfolio. Instructions for completing Midterm Portfolio (due by 5:00 p.m. Sunday, 10/14).
Assignment for 10/16:  Complete Midterm Portfolio. Start reading your book for the sciences. Keep writing your Writer's Notebook (only 3 pages required this week).

Week 7

Schedule a midterm conference with Dr. Trupe, to be held in Bowman 311 (office).

10/16 (T)
Drawing conclusions. Selecting and integrating quotations and paraphrases. MLA format. Point of view; pronouns. Making use of peer response. Editing/Proofreading Guidelines.
Assignment for 10/18: Continue reading your science book.

10/18 (R)
Postponed: Focus on sentence structure, sentence variety. Focus on Revising. Notebook check over the weekend: Bateman, Bay, Bradley, Burton, Clemons, Denisar.
Assignment for 10/23: Continue reading your science book. Using one of the library's subscription databases, find a useful article relevant to the topic you are reading about. Finish revising your humanities essay by 5:00 p.m. Sunday, 10/21.

Quality in writing: What constitutes quality in any discipline? What constitutes quality in a particular discipline? Reading and writing in the sciences (example). Research skills: summarizing and paraphrasing. BC's Plagiarism Policy. Choosing active or passive voice.
Assignment for 10/25: Read science text.

10/25 (R)
Scientific writing: tone. Paragraph development. Mini-conferences to check on your progress in reading. Notebook check over the weekend: Fenwick, Giles, Hayes, Howell, Keffer, Limbrick.
Assignment for 10/24:   Continue reading science book. As you work on your Ethics essay, choose one paragraph that you have drafted and revise it as though you were turning it in to me.  Bring hard copy of the drafted and revised paragraph to class on Tuesday.
Week 9

Alexander Mack Memorial Library presentation:  Evaluating sources.  Presenting scientific information. Scientific documentation format. PowerPoint assignment. BC's Plagiarism Policy.
Assignment for 11/1: Work on a PowerPoint presentation of information related to your topic, using your book and the article(s) you've found.

11/1 (R)
More work on paragraph development: paragraphs for analysis.  Alexander Mack Memorial Library presentation: Evaluating sources.
Postponed to Tuesday, 11/6: Work on PowerPoint. Mini-conferences on topics for science essay. Notebook check over the weekend: Madison, Morton, Richards, Rowe, Savage, Whisman-Dietz.
Assignment for 11/6:  Second revision of humanities essay due Tuesday, 11/6.
