During this part of the course, we will work on establishing appropriate reading behaviors for writers--noting how writers accomplish their purposes and adopting some of their strategies. You'll be writing your humanities essay and preparing a midterm portfolio for my evaluation. Then we'll be moving on to writing in the sciences.

| 10/2 (T) Presentations. Brainstorming activity: PDP essay on Intellectual Growth. Assignment for 10/4: Begin thinking about a topic for your humanities essay. If you have not finished 1984, do so. 10/4 (R) Discussion of Orwell. Developing your essay topic. See Essay Starters. Do you need to do some research? Evaluating Web sites. In-class mini-conferences. The Midterm Portfolio (due by 5:00 p.m. Sunday, 10/14). Assignment for 10/11: Draft humanities essay and work on Midterm Portfolio. |

(T) Quality in writing: What constitutes quality in any discipline? What constitutes quality in a particular discipline? Reading and writing in the sciences (example). Research skills: summarizing and paraphrasing. BC's Plagiarism Policy. Choosing active or passive voice. Assignment for 10/25: Read science text. 10/25 (R) Scientific writing: tone. Paragraph development. Mini-conferences to check on your progress in reading. Notebook check over the weekend: Fenwick, Giles, Hayes, Howell, Keffer, Limbrick. Assignment for 10/24: Continue reading science book. As you work on your Ethics essay, choose one paragraph that you have drafted and revise it as though you were turning it in to me. Bring hard copy of the drafted and revised paragraph to class on Tuesday. |
