During this part of the course, we will work on more complex analysis and thorough revising, culminating in the final portfolio, on which your grade for the course will be based.

  • Avoid wordiness--using roundabout phrasing when a single word will communicate the same idea.

Second revision of Humanities essay due. Work on PowerPoint presentations. Start work on science essay, time permitting.  Scientific documentation format.
Assignment for 11/8: Begin drafting science essay. Begin reading social science book (you'll need to finish before 11/27).
11/8 (R)
Workshop on Power Point (see these guidelines for recommendations) or science essay.  Focus on paragraph development and documentation.   Notebook check over the weekend: Bateman, Bay, Bradley, Burton, Clemons, Denisar.
Assignment for 11/13: Science essay due Thursday, 11/15. Continue reading social science book.

Workshop on science essay.  Focus on paragraph development and documentation. Model paragraphs for discussion
Postponed: Quality in writing, revisited: What constitutes quality in the social sciences? Evidence in the social sciences: How is research conducted?
Assignment for 11/15: Continue reading social science book. Begin gathering original data for social science essay.
11/15 (R)
POSTPONED TO TUESDAY: Gathering, interpreting, and reporting data in the social sciences. Q&A on revision of science essay. Notebook check over the weekend: Fenwick, Giles, Hayes, Howell, Keffer, Limbrick.
Assignment for 11/20:
Continue gathering data for social science essay; plan essay. Finish reading social science book, if you have not yet done so. Revise science essay.
Mini-conferences: developing a topic for social science essay. The conventions of writing in the social sciences: Verb tense, active or passive voice; point of view and pronoun use, revisited.
Week 12
11/20 (T)
Formatting and proofreading considerations. Work on science essay: Revision of science essay due 11/27. Gathering, interpreting, and reporting data in the social sciences.  Time permitting, take paraphrasing quiz. Notebook check over the holiday: Madison, Morton, Richards, Rowe, Savage, Whisman-Dietz.
Assignment for 11/27: Read a substantial amount of social science book. Revise and proofread science essay.

Week 13

11/27 (T)
APA format. Compare different citation formats for books and periodical articles in databases. Workshop on social science essay.  Final portfolio assignment, including reflective cover essay. Mini-conferences, as needed. (Consider making an appointment with Dr. Trupe or visiting the Writing Center.)
Assignment for 11/29: Revise social science essay as needed. Revisit humanities essay and consider what you should revise.
11/29 (R)
Review of formats: humanities, sciences, social sciences. Editing and proofreading concerns. Workshop on final portfolio. Mini-conferences, as needed. (Consider making an appointment with Dr. Trupe or visiting the Writing Center.)
Assignment for 12/4: Revise for portfolio and write reflective cover essay. Complete Writer's Notebook.

Week 14
12/4 (T)
Writer's Notebook due.
The reading for Final In-class Essay: peer discussion is okay, no comments from Dr. Trupe. Q&A about final portfolio.
Final Exam Period, Friday, 12/7, 8:00-10:00 a.m. (Exam Schedule on Registrar's Web page)
Portfolio due. Final In-class Essay. Documentation Quiz.
