Week 1

9/2 (T)
Introduction to class.  Online syllabus.  Assignment of first informal writing. Announcement: lunchtime discussion of reading, this Friday at noon in the cafeteria in KCC, sponsored by Dr. Galloway; free-wheeling discussion on anything you like to read; a purely voluntary activity, for the fun of it!
Assignment for 9/4: Prepare for in-class essay. Read "Why I Write" by George Orwell. If time permits, work your way through the Inventory of Writing Experience.

Assignment for 9/9: Complete essay of introduction.

Week 2

9/9 (T)
Essay of introduction due.
Sharing your essay. Discussion of "Why I Write." Quotations. Reading as a writer. Writer's Notebook assignment.  Interview assignment.
Assignment for 9/11: Read "Politics and the English Language" by George Orwell. 

9/11 (R)
English major pre-test. Discussion of "Politics and the English Language." Preparing to read 1984: focus on language, memory, history, political control.
Assignment for 9/16: Begin reading 1984 (through One III).

Week 3

9/16 (T)
Discussion of reading. Orwell: biography + writing life.
Assignment for 9/18: Continue reading 1984 (One VII).

9/18 (R)
1984: politics and language; Some Definitions of Rhetoric.
Assignment for 9/23: Continue reading 1984. (Through Two VIII by 9/25 to keep on track.) Prepare to present your interview and follow up with written version.  For an example of an interview, see this Powell's Books interview with author Ann Patchett.  Read "A Hanging" by George Orwell.

Week 4

9/23 (T)
Discussion of interviews with faculty members. Discussion of 1984, time permitting.
Assignment for 9/25: Complete written interview.  Continue reading 1984

9/25 (R)
Written version of interview due. 
Combined class:  We will meet with Dr. Huffstetler's PDP 150 class to talk about reflective writing, and I will ask Dr. Huffstetler to share information about his writing experiences.  We will meet across the hall in Bowman 319.
Assignment for 9/30: Finish reading 1984.
