ENG310: Professional Writing
Fall 2007

Textbooks:

  • Murray, Donald M.  Crafting a Life in Essay, Story, Poem.  Boynton/Cook, 1996. 

  • Lamott, Anne. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. Anchor Books, 1995.  

Additional reading will include selected essays, articles, and book excerpts on reserve or online.

Course Requirements: 

Writing Notebook:
Please keep a notebook of freewriting, responses to reading, ideas for writing, writing exercises, etc.  Try to write in it daily throughout the semester.  (You can word-process part or all of it and keep it in a binder or sturdy folder for turning it in. Your notebook will be 40% of your grade.  For an A, write 10 pages/week (averaging about 300 words/page) for 12 weeks; for a B, write 8-9 pages/week; for a C, write 5-7 pages/week.  Any notebook of less than 60 pages will receive an F. 
Portfolio:
Your final portfolio should be 18-24 pages of finished work including at least two genres.  Your portfolio will be 50% of your grade.
Web site:
You will create one or more Web pages featuring writing for a worldwide audience. Your Web site will be 5% of your grade.
Editing Test:
There will be one test, an editing test, administered during the Final Exam period.  Your grade on the editing test will be 5% of your grade.
