ENG315, Teaching Writing
Policies:
Attendance:
Much of the work for this course occurs during class time. You should plan on attending every meeting. I understand, however, that occasionally illness or some other personal problem may interfere with attendance. For that reason, I will permit 4 absences without penalty. Please save these allowed absences for necessary absences. My policy is not meant to suggest 4 free days in addition to any illness, delay in return from a weekend at home, personal problem, etc.
If some problem arises that will result in more extended absence, you must contact me to explain the circumstances. I will ask for a doctor's excuse if I have not been advised by the Student Development Office that you will be unable to attend class. In the event of such excused absence, we will meet as soon as you are able and will discuss arrangements for an alternative means of satisfying participation requirements during your absence.
Excessive unexcused absence, however, will be considered a factor in your final grade for the course.
Cell Phones:
Please leave your cell phone at home, or turn off the ring tone while you are in class. Text messaging in class is inappropriate. If you have an emergency situation that requires your immediate attention, please leave class to take care of it.
Grading:
Your grade in this class rests on your portfolio, which will contain your Learning & Teaching Log, assigned essays, and classroom activities and exercises, including development of a Web page. Individual texts will not be graded, but you will receive feedback from your peers and from me, and papers may be revised as much as you choose. In general, good writing will clearly address the assignment and will have a clear focus and reader-friendly organization, cohesiveness (use of transitions), adequate and specific support for generalizations, sentence variety, appropriate diction, and thorough proofreading. Excellent writing shows comprehensive knowledge of the topic and originality in expression, in addition to consistent evidence of the characteristics of good writing.
I expect your work to be original. Be sure to document any information that comes from an outside source, in accordance with Bridgewater College's Plagiarism Policy.
