This course is designed to be useful to prospective teachers at levels K through college.  We will use books on writing geared to teaching at both elementary and secondary levels.  My premise is that the same philosophy of literacy learning applies, no matter what the level, because human beings learn to use language in much the same ways throughout their lives:  through exposure, practice, feedback, experimentation, for the learner's own purposes, in specific social settings.  Research on process and workshop approaches, and on assessment practices, undergirds this philosophy.
