| The following books are
recommended to give teachers and prospective teachers an overview of the
field of YA fiction. The list includes contemporary "classics" of YA
literature and books that have generated significant critical discussion.
Many of them are widely used in middle school and high school classrooms,
but it is recommended that you read them carefully to determine
appropriateness for the context in which you teach. I've left out a
number of personal favorites, and this list is not meant to identify the
"best" in YA literature. There are likely too many adventure novels
and, certainly, not enough sports novels. Many excellent novels
dealing with sexuality and violence are not on this list.
