Week 1

1/25 (F)
Introduction to this course.
Assignment for 1/28: Write a brief introduction of yourself, starting with some background information so I know something about you, then going on to focus on your preferences in reading and films.  You'll turn this in on Monday so I can get to know about you through what you write, but it is also the first entry in your reading log. Please make this a couple of double-spaced pages long, formatted according to MLA guidelines.

Week 2

The nature of storytelling: our expectations; the impact of the unexpected. Writing about film.

1/28 (M)
Small-group and whole class discussion: the stories we enjoy (in print or on screen). Selecting films for viewing and discussion.

Assignment for 1/30:
View one of the films selected in class.  Keep notes on the story.

1/30 (W)
Film analysis: plot, character, theme.
Assignment for 2/1: Read Writing about Film (handout).  View film again, taking additional notes; or watch a different film from the list, taking notes. 

2/1 (F)
Film analysis.
Assignment for 2/4: Prepare for In-Class Essay by reading the short story (forwarded in email). Informal writing assignment for Weds.: our expectations of stories, incorporating references to at least one print text and one film.

Week 3

In-class essay.  Writing assignment: out-of-class essay.

2/4 (M)
In-class writing (topic for all ENG 102 students)
Assignment for 2/6:
Complete informal writing assignment.

2/6 (W)
Discussion of informal writing.  Starting Essay #1, on film.
Assignment for 2/8: Tentative: Read Overview of Postmodern Movies and read some of the definitions of terms at Dictionary of Postmodern Terms. You can find an analysis of Blade Runner at http://www.helium.com/tm/130981/hassan-noted-postmodernism-oxymoron1and.  Begin planning your paper.

2/8 (F)
Planning your paper + writing your introduction.
Assignment for 2/11: Draft Essay #1.

Week 4

Focus on Essay #1.

2/11 (M)
Discussion of drafts.  (You need to have a complete hard-copy draft to receive full credit for this essay.)
Assignment for 2/13: Work further on your draft, adding evidence as needed, strengthening connections, and extending your conclusions.

2/13 (W)
Writing considerations: word choice, sentence structure.
Assignment for 2/15: Continue strengthening your essay, focusing on word choice, sentence structure, and proofreading. Begin reading White Noise (through Chapter 7, if possible).

2/15 (F)
Postponed to Monday, 2/18: Out-of-class Essay #1 due. (Include draft.) Discussion of White Noise.
Assignment for 2/18: Read White Noise through Chapter 20 for Monday; by Wednesday, part of the long Chapter 21; finishing Chapter 21 by Friday, 2/22.

Week 5

Discussion of White Noise. Analyzing fiction: working from response to critique. Schedule appointments with Dr. Trupe.

In-class writing and discussion of White Noise.
Assignment for 2/20: Read about one-half of Chapter 22 of White Noise.

2/20 (W)
Analyzing fiction: themes, recurring images, symbols.  (You may want to start noting quotations you might use in an essay on White Noise.)
Assignment for 2/22: Finish reading Chapter 22 of White Noise.

2/22 (F)
Discussion of White Noise.
Assignment for 2/25: Read Chapters 22-36 of White Noise by Wednesday, 2/27.
