Introduction and syllabus. Prereading questions: How do we know when someone close to us needs our help? What can we do if someone refuses our help?
Assignment for 6/17:
Begin reading A River Runs Through It. As you read, note:

  • indicators that Paul is in trouble;
  • indicators that he will not accept Norman's help;
  • indicators of Norman's feelings about his brother and other family members;
  • any potentially significant passages.

Discussion of reading. Responses to literary texts. In-class writing. 
Assignment for 6/18:  Continue reading A River Runs Through It, noting significant passages as suggested above.

Quality in writing: What makes published writing good? What makes student writing good? See examples from sports writing and other nonfiction writing.
Assignment for 6/19: Finish reading A River Runs Through It.

Discussion of reading.
Assignment for 6/20: Read critical articles: "The Prodigal Son Parable and Maclean's A River Runs Through It (Renascence 58.2[Winter 2005]) and "'Haunted by Waters': Narrative Reconciliation in Norman Maclean's A River Runs Through It" (Critique 42.2 [Winter 2001]).

Discussion of research. Selecting a research topic for major paper.
Assignment for 6/27:
Start reading Fences. Select a research paper topic. Complete Essay 1.

6/27 (F)
Meet in Alexander Mack Memorial Library.  Essay 1 due.
Self-assessment. Mini-conferences on research topic. Work on preliminary bibliography.
Assignment for 6/30:
Finish reading Fences. Questions to consider:

  • What are the limitations in Troy's life?
  • Is Troy a hero?
  • Is Troy a good husband/father/brother/friend?
