Course Requirements and Assignments

Schedule

We will look at a number of short stories that exhibit characteristics of the Modernist period and a representative Postmodernist novel, White Noise.  On the basis of these texts, some critical articles, some recent films, and some reading that you will do individually, we will work toward an understanding of the meaning of the terms "modern" and "postmodern" as they apply to literary works, films, and contemporary society.  You will demonstrate your understanding in several essays and one longer, research-based paper, as well as in a journal of responses to readings and informal wriitng on specific assigned topics meant to prepare you for writing the longer essays.
