PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Manager of Technical Services and Network Administrator has the following responsibilities:

  • Manages the planning, configuration, supervision, and daily operation of the college network including:
    1. Switches/Routers/Firewall/VPN
    2. Campus cabling infrastructure
    3. Servers
    4. Workstations
    5. Software
  • Manages campus systems/applications such as the ID card system, calendar system and the campus email infrastructure
  • Ensures that the campus network is tuned for optimum performance and provides capabilities required by campus end users
  • Serves as IT security officer and ensures that college networks and systems are adequately protected
  • Acts as chief advisor on all aspects of campus information technology
  • Develops and maintains custom scripting (e.g., PERL) in support of system administration and dynamic web content
  • Coordinates technical projects and staff
  • Manages the Help Desk operations
  • Supervises the network engineering and desktop computing support staff

Born in Newport Beach California, Mr. Cone received his undergraduate degree at Ferrum College, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1992. Since then he has pursued a career in Information Technology working in health care, public utilities and other IT corporations.  He recently moved to Harrisonburg from Charleston South Carolina where he worked for HCA Healthcare, MED3000 and the Commissioners of Public Works. His positions have included systems manager, PC specialist, network administrator, director of technical services, senior network engineer and, most recently, manager of IT security.
