Cycadaceae

The Cycadaceae family is tropical. I have seen these taxa when I used to live in Florida, and also during visits to Bermuda.  They are dioecious, and their palm-like leaves can be deceptive.  The naked seed, shown here in the male cone to the right, indicates it to be a conifer.

This picture was taken in the Botanical Gardens in Bermuda.  Cycads are all over the island as ornamentals, and there is no question as to which is male or female.

The female version of this species, shown here from a park in St. Georges, would not qualify as something all that "pretty."  The palm -like leaves are spirally arranged and pinnately compound.
