The "Introduced" Flora of Wildwood Park
| The following list is
preliminary. It represents a list of plants put together by
various interested members of the wildwood project, all of which were
planted in spring and fall of 1998. Others have since been added,
and since I was not involved in these plantings, I intend to sleuth those out and add them to this list. Links
will take you to pertinent information about these taxa. This
comprises the woody species. These plantings have been
intermingled amongst the trees which have survived the flooding: Populus
deltoides (cottonwood); Platanus
occidentalis (sycamore); Acer
negundo (box elder); Acer
saccharinum (silver maple); Pinus
strobus (white pine); Liriodendron
tulipifera (tulip poplar), Sassafras
albidum (sasafras), Lindera
benzoin (spicebush) and others.
Unfortunately, some of the plantings listed below have struggled with a variety of natural problems, including drought, disease, some pilfering (which is beyond my contempt) and a den of pesky beavers that have been a major problem. It was decided that these events ought to be a part of the teaching about Wildwood. We were really disturbed when a town representative told us they "took care" of the beavers. It hurts to see Mother Nature deal with our work, but it hurts more whenever we humans try to interfere with Mother Nature. Below are the species planted: |
