Add a Question of the Day

How to Create a "Question of the Day" Form

1. Saving the Template Form

Adding a "Question of the Day" form to the web resources of a course is relatively straightforward, if a bit of care is taken. Use the "Question of the Day" form available at the AC100 web site as a template. Simply click on the link to the "Question of the Day" and then from the View menu select Source. Immediately Save this code into the folder where you want your "Question of the Day" to be located on your X-drive. Give the file an appropriate name such as, "QofDay.html", .

2. Tailor the Template Form to Fit You and Your Web Site Design

Through "My Computer" move to the folder with the template file, saved in the first step, and double-click on the template file to open it in Internet Explorer. Open it from there for editing in ForntPage 2000. (This file may be modified in its raw HTML form using the menu View/Source, but it is most easily done in a WYSIWYG HTML editor. A tutorial for FrontPage 2000 is available at this site.)

Change the background, HTML page title and the page header to suit the design of the web pages for your course. DO NOT DELETE any of the small rectangular graphics indicating the existence of JavaScript code.

Right click on the selection box to the right of the words, "The Course." Select "Form Field Properties" from the drop-down menu. Modify the AC 100 entry to suit your course name. Add another entry, if this "Question of the Day" will be used by more than one course or section. Save the file.

Continue editing by right-clicking in the form area again and selecting "Form Properties" from the drop-down menu. Press the Settings button and modify the Action line to have your email address in place of "rbowman@bridgewater.edu".

Also modify this line so that the portion of it that reads "/cescc/acadcomp/AC100/FormNotice.html" will now read "/~rbowman/phys110/FormNotice.html" where you make it read appropriately for your course web site. DO NOT MODIFY anything else on this line.

Save the file before making any other modifications. This is now your basic template.

3. Modify the Revised Template to Create a Particular "Question of the Day"

Now simply edit the date on which the question is due and question #1 on the form itself, to suit your needs.

Before saving the file and closing FrontPage 2000, right-click in the form area and select "Form Properties" again. Modify only the hidden field that is showing in the bottom half of the resulting dialog box. When selecting Modify, a new dialog box will appear. Edit only the Value to include the due date and some simple words that briefly describe the question you are asking for responses to.

Finally, save the file, and close FrontPage 2000.

4. Making the Form Active on the Internet

Place a link to this "Question of the Day" on the main page of your course's web site and copy the "Question of the Day" file to your W-drive.

Lastly, give it all a test-drive!
