The Internet, with its vast store of information (some reliable and a lot bogus) and its graphical interface, has reshaped the way most students expect to learn to day. At the same time, faculty members at most four-year liberal arts college are convinced that face-to-face education is the best way to learn. These two ideas are not at odds with each other, as many of us have already discovered. Courses taught at Bridgewater College can be web-enhanced to the benefit of students and professors. This workshop is designed to assist college educators in adding or improving the web components of their courses.
During this workshop, participants will be given the opportunity:
1. to hear about what other professors have done and are doing to web-enhance their courses;
2. to participate in and discuss the effectiveness of various pedagogical techniques that can be invoked using the Internet, for example, synchronous and asynchronous communication through the BC-MOO and BC-BBS, online questions using web-based forms, and online quizzes/surveys;
3. to learn how to construct web pages using Microsoft FrontPage and Netscape Composer;
4. to learn about preparing and using PowerPoint presentations in an interactive way;
5. to begin to see some possibilities and techniques for using audio and video for web-enhancing a course;
6. to explore the concepts of usability and accessibility as related to effective web pages;
7. to learn the basics of creating and preparing graphics for inclusion in web pages.
Each participant will choose to concentrate on these objectives differently. The hands-on, individualized, project-driven approach used in this workshop will illustrate what can be done using educational technology in the teaching of college courses.
There is no textbook for this workshop, however, participants will become aware of the numerous resources available through the Academic Computing web site here at Bridgewater College and at other locations on the Internet.
Each participant has already selected a basic project upon which to focus during the workshop proper and the rest of the summer. Please continue to feel free to contact me during the summer and school year as you have need. I generally check my email several times a day from home and will be glad and honored to respond to questions by email or by phone calls to my home.
This is the section where I normally spell out my attendance policies and include a paragraph about the Honor Code such as this:

Note that as a small accolade to you for participating in this workshop, I will submit the names of all participants, along with a brief summary of the workshop, to Dean Hessler for his records
Obviously there is no grading in this workshop, but every syllabus needs to spell out how the grades are figured. So here is an example from my astronomy course.

Note that I do not believe my grading is accurate enough to warrant using a +/- scale. (More pedagogy to discuss among us when we are tired of discussing educational technology!)
