Second Paper Assignment
Choose a text other than "The Battle of Maldon" and "The Wife of Bath" that we have been assigned in this course. You may link it to works outside the assigned material but are not required to do so. Choose a specific critical approach (e.g., feminist, formalist, psychoanalytic) as your primary method. The paper is NOT a history of the critical theory but an application of the theory in discussing the selected work.
Your paper should define the chosen approach in an early paragraph or two (perhaps 15% of the total essay length), naming a significant critic to the field and a significant critic dealing with the chosen work and then apply it to the work you have chosen in the bulk of the paper.
The webpage concerning Robert Herrick may give you some ideas. The link there to luminarium.org is especially rich in primary and secondary sources for poetry from the Renaissance to the 18th century.
In general, I would expect a "C" paper would properly quote from the text and critical materials. An "A" or "B" paper will include additional sources outside the class materials. For convenience, please use the Norton text for your quotations. A professional-looking 1500-word paper in MLA style (available in the campus library reference desk and permanent reserve or in the Writing Center) should be presented on December 3.
