"Tarzan Rescues the Moon"

Text of "Tarzan Rescues the Moon" (chapter 12 of Jungle Tales of Tarzan)

Painting by Larry Schwinger, first published on the Burroughs Bulletin New Series #23 (July 1995).  Used by permission.

Discussion Questions:

Though we understand the natural phenomenon of "rescuing the moon," what natural theology seems apparent in Tarzan's reasoning?

Adams compares Tarzan's retreat to the cabin with Christ's 40-day wilderness experience, as a period of spiritual definition and refinement.  In what ways does such a comparison enrich the tale?

In Part three of his "reading," Adams makes the statement: "An eclipse of the moon is turned into an occasion of symbolistic epiphany."  How do you explain or interpret this epiphany?
