Seven BC Students Presented Awards from the Department of Health and Human Sciences

Seven Bridgewater College students were presented awards from the department of health and human sciences during the annual awards ceremony.

Major of the Year awards were presented in the following fields of study – Samantha Myers received the award in athletic training, Amber O’Connor in nutrition and wellness, Raymond Marion in health and exercise science, Joshua Yagel in health and physical education and Nicholas Zimmerman in family and consumer sciences.

Major of the Year awards are presented to students who exhibit strong academic skills and substantial career-related experiences, as well as for being positive role models.  

Myers is the daughter of Bruce and Julie Myers of Waxhaw, N.C. O’Connor is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul O’Connor of Mount Airy, Md. Marion is the son of Brenda and Daniel Marion of Seaford, Va. Yagel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Yagel of Olney, Md. Zimmerman is the son of Dennis and DeDe Zimmerman of Shenandoah, Va.

Myers will pursue a doctor of physical therapy at Mary Baldwin University’s Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences.

Connor Maguder received the Excellence in Academics award, which is presented to the student who demonstrates academic excellence and engages in the learning process in the classroom and beyond. Maguder, a health and physical education major, is the son of Betty Maguder of Alexandria, Va., and Theodore Maguder of Woodbridge, Va.

Yagel, a health and physical education major, was presented the Excellence in Leadership and Service award for demonstrating excellence in leadership, character and service.                                                                               

Alexis Mathias, a junior family and consumer sciences major, received the Rugby H. St.John Endowed Scholarship in Family and Consumer Sciences. The award, valued at $2,100, is presented to a student seeking a degree in family and consumer sciences with preference given to those seeking certification in secondary education. The award is based on scholarship, leadership and character. Mathias is the daughter of Boyd and Beverly Mathias of Strasburg, Va.
