Bridgewater College Presents 2017 Philomathes Society Awards

Two Bridgewater College students, Carrie Ann Dean and Logan Wynne Hasty, received scholarships from the Philomathes Society, the college’s scholastic honor society, at the college awards ceremony.

The scholarships are presented to members of the Philomathes Society who are selected by the executive committee.

Dean received the Love of Learning Scholarship. The award reflects the Philomathes Society’s desire to encourage intellectual curiosity, research and creativity by honoring a student who demonstrates a desire to pursue an individual intellectual project.

Dean, a junior liberal studies major and a teacher education candidate, lives in Bridgewater, Va. She is the daughter of Jerry and Lori Flick of Harrisonburg, Va.

Dean is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater’s scholastic honor society, and Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society. She serves as a student assistant in the office of academic support services.   

Hasty received the Graduate School Scholarship. The award reflects the Philomathes Society’s investment in life-long learning by honoring a senior who plans to enter graduate school immediately following graduation.

Hasty, a senior Spanish and communication studies double major, is the daughter of Frankie and Judith Hasty of Carrsville, Va.

Hasty is a member of the Philomathes Society and serves as president of the World Languages Club. She represents the senior class on Student Senate and is senior resident advisor.

Hasty graduated on May 20, and will pursue an M.A. in college student development at Appalachian State University.

Emily Rieflin was recognized with the Community Engagement Gift. The gift reflects the Philomathes Society’s desire to encourage intellectual curiosity, research and creativity by honoring a student who has been actively involved in a non-profit community organization and has used his/her academic talents to assist the organization. The gift will be given to the community organization on behalf of the student.  

Rieflin, a junior Spanish major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rieflin of Salem, Va. She is a member of the Philomathes Society and Alpha Mu Gamma, a national collegiate foreign language honor society.

Rieflin volunteered as a leader and mentor to students who participated in Young Life at Harrisonburg High School. Young Life was presented the gift on behalf of Rieflin.

The Philomathes Society encourages scholarly effort and honors students, faculty members and alumni who have achieved unusual distinction in the pursuit of knowledge. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or higher.
