BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In polling conducted by Sporting News magazine, the Bridgewater Eagles were selected as the 17th-best squad in Division III football.
Bridgewater’s 17th-place ranking speaks volumes of the program’s recent success, even on the heels of a 4-6 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the ODAC. The Eagles open up the season on September 5, when the Averett Cougars visit Jopson Field at 1:00 p.m.
At the top of the Sporting News poll is the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Warhawks have made the trip to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the past four seasons and have compiled a 55-5 mark during the four year run. Perennial Division III power Mount Union (Ohio) took home the runner-up post.
Also, second-year linebackers coach Ben Taylor was featured in today’s edition of the Harrisonburg Daily News Record.

A total of 23 Bridgewater Collge student-athletes were recognized recently by Chi Alpha Sigma - the National College Athlete Honor Society.The National College Athletes Honor Society recognizes college juniors and seniors who acheive a 3.4 GPA or better while lettering in intercollegiate athletics. Recognized from Bridgewater were: Zach Agee, Jonathan Burns, Parla Cline, James Doyle, Drew Elkins, Patrick Foltz, Chelsea Goss, Jordan Hardy,Rebecca Henderson, Jake Johnson, Graville Jordan, Megan Mathias and Kyle Peroutky. Also, Brian Remsch, Paige Riegen, Nathan Rittenhouse, Mallory Sandridge, Jennifer Saunders, Elizabeth Smith, Chris Thomas, Andrew Thornton, Jill Wattai and Brittney Wittmer. |
Bridgewater College head softball coach Donnie Fulk has been named the VaSID College Division Coach of the Year along with Lynchburg College head coach Dawn Simmons. Fulk led the Eagles to a 36-11 overall record and the program’s second NCAA tournament appearance. The Eagles lost in the title game of the Salisbury bracket to the host Salisbury team, 2-1. Bridgewater finished the year ranked No. 18 in the final NFCA Division III Top 25 poll. The Eagles also placed three players on the all-state first team and one on the second team. Named to the first team were senior catcher Caity Butler, senior outfielder Kaitlyn Bowman and junior pitcher Ashley Gills. Butler hit for a .333 average and finished the season with 36 RBIs. She led the team in homers with five. Bowman, who finished her career as BC’s all-time leader in hits, homers and RBIs, hit .362 with three homers and 33 RBIs. Gills finished 16-5 on the season with a 0.98 ERA. Sophomore designated player Emily Morris was named to the second team. Morris led the Eagles in hitting with a .387 average and in RBIs with 38. |
Bridgewater College is ranked No. 18 in the nation in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III softball poll of the year.The Eagles finished the season with a strong run in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, advancing to the final game of the Salisbury breaking where they lost to Salisbury, 2-1. Bridgewater completed the 2009 season with a 36-11 record. Fellow ODAC member Lynchburg, was ranked No. 16 in the final poll The Eagles finished in the Top 25 for the second time in the past three years.
