Ceramic Work by Richelle Soper on Display at Bridgewater College Nov. 6 – Dec. 8

An exhibition of ceramic work by Richelle Soper will be showcased at Bridgewater College from Monday, Nov. 6, through Friday, Dec. 8 in the Beverly Perdue Art Gallery located on the main level of the John Kenny Forrer Learning Commons.

The exhibition, Counterparts, is a body of ceramic work that questions the relationship between objects that are intended to function together; think a nut and a bolt. Soper uses recognizable forms in unexpected ways to create a comic yet unsettling dynamic for the viewer to contemplate the mundane.

“My sculptures are interpretations of the cold machines we surround ourselves with in combination to the soft, aestheticized way that we curate our direct, intimate living spaces. Imagery of deconstructed industrial objects merged with gentle elements of decorated interiors create foreign, yet familiar, compositions,” Soper said.

Soper received a bachelor of fine arts at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and a master of fine arts at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Soper has been nominated for awards for her work including the Outstanding Student Achievement Award at the International Sculpture Center in New York.

The art exhibition will have an opening reception in the gallery from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, with an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m.

The art exhibition, opening reception and artist’s talk are free and open to the public. The gallery is open from 7:30 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; and noon to midnight on Sunday.
