Bridgewater College senior Naomi Reynolds received the Melissa D. Jett Community Service Award. The award recognizes outstanding leadership in community service.

The award is named in memory of Melissa D. Jett, who would have graduated with the Bridgewater College class of 1999. She died Jan. 15, 1997, as the result of a traffic accident on campus. During her life, Jett was dedicated to serving others. The award is presented to a student “who has demonstrated consistent and exemplary leadership in community service while a student at Bridgewater College.”

Reynolds, a business administration major from Virginia Beach, Va., served as the community engagement coordinator in BC’s Center for Engaged Learning (CEL). She is a member of the national leadership honor society Omicron Delta Kappa, was a residential advisor on campus and served as a member of BC’s Spiritual Life Board. She was vice president of Women at Work, a student organization that focuses on raising awareness of and improving issues that affect women. In addition, Reynolds has volunteered extensively with Habitat for Humanity, helping with local build days, alternative spring break trips and serving as the campus chapter’s president.

Off-campus, Reynolds has served as a mentor to clients at People Places, a nonprofit agency serving Staunton, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg and the surrounding areas in Virginia by providing an array of foster care, adoption and community-based services. She has also served as a youth leader for On the Road Collaborative Development Center in Harrisonburg, which works to provide resources and opportunities to close the learning gap for underserved youth.

Following graduation, Reynolds will work at Harrisonburg High School as a college advisor. She will also continue to work part-time for On the Road Collaborative.
