Elementary Teacher Education Program (PreK-6)

Teach the future

Do you want to work with young children? Teach the basics of reading, writing, math and much more in our elementary schools? Welcome to the elementary Teacher Education Program (TEP) at Bridgewater College.

Bridgewater College provides a state-approved program for the preparation of elementary teachers. If you successfully complete this program and pass the Virginia Communications and Literacy Assessment (VCLA), Reading for Virginia Educators and the appropriate Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects tests, you will receive licensure in Virginia and may receive initial licensure to teach in many other states through reciprocal certification contracts.

You should apply to the PreK-6 Elementary Teacher Education Program in order to be licensed to teach grades PreK-6.

Candidates may also seek add-on endorsements to their teaching license by taking a Praxis subject area exam.

Elementary education candidates major in Liberal Studies.

It is vital for prospective elementary teachers to have a solid working knowledge in the core subject areas (English, science, mathematics and social studies) in order to implement the standards of learning as established by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Common Core standards of other states. The PreK-6 licensure requirements at Bridgewater College include successful completion of three tracks: (1) courses of the major, (2) the College’s general education requirements, and (3) the required Teacher Education Program (EDUC) courses.

Consult early with the education department faculty regarding your choice of major. If you are a transfer candidate, you should meet with a member of the education department as soon as you arrive at Bridgewater to plan your education course sequence.

Liberal Studies Major

The liberal studies major is ideal for teacher candidates in the elementary education program. Candidates would complete the PreK-6 licensure track within the major.

Specific requirements for licensure and the liberal studies major can be found in the College Catalog.
