Biology Awards Presented at Bridgewater College

Bridgewater College’s department of biology has recognized seniors for their accomplishments in biology and environmental science.

Bridgewater College’s department of biology has recognized seniors for their accomplishments in biology and environmental science.

Doris C. Angrand, Angela L. Harner, Kelley l. Hilliker and Jessica L. Wilson received Excellence in Biology Awards during the college awards ceremony. The award is presented to graduating seniors who place in the top 10 percent of the class as determined by grade point average (GPA) within the biology major.

Angrand, a biology major, is from Haiti. She is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater’s scholastic honor society, and Beta Beta Beta, a national biological honor society. She is a member of the Biology Club and the Chemistry Club, and has completed two internships—with Dr. Mac Garrison D.D.S. in Harrisonburg, Va., and with Dr. Joanna Bazin Dupoux in Haiti.

Harner, a biology major with a minor in applied chemistry, is from Nokesville, Va. She is a member of the Philomathes Society, Beta Beta Beta and Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society. She spent a semester doing an independent research internship in the field of organic chemistry under the guidance of Dr. Joseph Crockett, professor of chemistry.

Hilliker, a biology major with a minor in psychology, is the daughter of Terry and Cristy Hilliker of Middletown, Va. She is a member of the Philomathes Society and Beta Beta Beta. She serves as secretary of the campus chapter of Psi Chi, an international psychology honor society.

Wilson, a biology and environmental science double major, is from Salem, Va. She is a member of the Philomathes Society and the college’s Flory Honors Program.

Sydney T. McTigue and Wilson were presented Excellence in Environmental Science Awards given to the top graduating seniors as determined by GPA within the environmental science major.

McTigue, an environmental science major, is the daughter of Stephen and Prina McTigue of Roanoke, Va. McTigue is a member of the Philomathes Society and Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society. She serves as event coordinator for the Environmental Club. She completed a research project with Dr. Tim Kreps titled “Addressing Food Insecurity in Rockingham County with an Organic Garden.”

Abigail E. Ferson received the Outstanding Research Award—Environmental Science, presented for the best undergraduate research in environmental science.

Ferson, a biology and environmental science double major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Ferson of Manassas, Va. Ferson is a member of Beta Beta Beta. She serves as a student assistant for biology and works in the college’s herbarium. She is co-founder and co-president of the Environmental Science Club. During the summer of 2018, she was a field ecology intern at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and did research on “Drivers of Global Patterns in Forest Detrital Matter Stocks.”

Laurel M. Glover received the Outstanding Research Award—Biology, presented for the best undergraduate research in biology.

Glover, a biology major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Glover of Ellicott City, Md. Glover is a member of the Philomathes Society and Beta Beta Beta. During the summer of 2018, she did a research project, “Effects of Landscape Heterogeneity and Forest Management on Digestibility of White-Tailed Deer Diets,” funded by the Dr. John Martin Summer Science Research Institute at Bridgewater College.

Following graduation on May 4, Harner will pursue a master of science in physician assistant studies at DeSales University. Hilliker will pursue a master’s degree in digital media strategy from Bridgewater College. McTigue will serve as coordinator of the food pantry garden project at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren and serve as an intern for the Shenandoah Valley Soil and Water Conservation District in Harrisonburg, Va. Ferson will pursue a master’s degree in plant pathology from the University of Idaho. Glover will be employed by the U.S. Forest Service in Lyndhurst, Va.
